HandiRack (PennyO)
Nigel asked in the March Gossip if anyone had used a HandiRack. Last Spring, as Peter's car was having lengthy repairs following an argument with some ice and a traffic bollard, we bought a HandiRack from the online web-site. True to the adverts, it cost £49.99 and came with a free set of good quality straps delivered to our door within 3 days. It was very easy to fit and use on my Fiat Punto and the sea kayak felt quite secure. I think it would cope easily with a standard open canoe but those with outriggers may find it too narrow to take both a canoe and outriggers.
Canoe Towing (BrianP)
I am trying to find a solution for cycling two miles from home to my local launch spot with my canoe. Here are some ideas found on the web. Have OCSG members already solved this problem?
Canoe Portage (NigelC)
Here are my wheels. Those at the top fit my canoe. The keel fits between the wooden panels. The wheels come off when the pins are taken from the hollow, square section, shaft. The middle ones both fit my sailing kayak. Old demountable pushchair wheels or plastic pneumatic held on with spring clips. Lastly my Easkey kayak has two grooves down the hull into which the inner tube covered bars fit. I cut two inches from the pushchair axle and welded it back together, so that these wheels go in front of my adjustable footrests when paddling.
I looked for devices in old Gossips. Numbers 80 and 92 show only commercial folding ones with the comment that the hull should rest on the webbing rather than metal shafts. I am so pleased that I am not inadvertently re-inventing the wheel.
